    Glass Axis is happy to partner with the Ohio Arts Council to bring Matt Paskiet to Columbus as our visiting artist and instructor this September.

    Matt Paskiet began his study of Glass Blowing at the Toledo Museum of Art and further pursued his studies at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, as well as Fundacio Centre del Vidre de Barcelona. After his training, Mr. Paskiet refined his skills by assisting esteemed glass artists Dale Chihuly and Dino Rosin. Ready to practice all he had learned, he returned to Toledo where he has been creating his glass for over 22 years.

    Paskiet owns and operates Firenation Glassblowing Studio and Gallery in Holland, OH. Currently, his work has been selected by Ohio First Lady Karen Kasich as one of two artists whose work will be showcased at the governor’s residence through September.

    His work is a reflection of his unique vision, and passion inspired by his love of nature and spirituality. “Only through trial and error did I finally realize the passion in my life: Glass and the possibilities available with glass as timeless art. As I grow with the medium, my respect grows for it as well. I have only scratched the surface of my imagination and application; the possibilities are endless.”

    Matt Paskiet will be teaching specialty glassmaking workshops using traditional Italian techniques he is fluent in. There will be three evening paperweight workshops that are require no previous glass experience, where participants will be treated to a demonstration of cane pulling, a studio tour, as well as make a paperweight with the help of Paskiet. These paperweight classes will take place on September 19th, 20th, and 21st. The artist will also be offering a more advanced workshop to glassmakers interested in learning his Italian techniques over a 4-day period, September 25th -28th.

    Mille Fiore Flower Paperweight-Create a paperweight filled with a garden of flowers, using the classic Italian murrini called mille fiore, which is translated to a thousand flowers. In this special 3 hour class, you will arrange dozens of tiny glass flower murrini that will be transformed into a beautiful paperweight, just like the ones they make in Murano, Italy. Your class will begin with a private cane pulling demonstration by Matt Paskiet as you see how cane and murrini like the ones you are using are made. Then you will get to be hands-on with the glass and the help of Matt to make your glass masterpiece. This one time class will take place on Tuesday September 19th from 6-9pm.

    Swirly Cane Paperweight-Create a paperweight filled with a swirling lines and internal twists, using the classic Italian cane technique. In this special 3 hour class, you will arrange various colorful rods of cane that will be transformed into a beautiful paperweight as they are twisted and weaved together throughout the interior of your one-of-a-kind paperweight, just like the ones they make in Murano, Italy. Your class will begin with a private cane pulling demonstration by Matt Paskiet as you see how cane like the ones you are using are made. Then you will get to be hands-on with the glass and the help of Matt to make your glass masterpiece. This one time class will take place on Wednesday September 20th from 6-9pm.

    Feathered Paperweight with Millie Fiore Accents-Create a paperweight filled with swirling lines in a feathered pattern surrounded by a garden of flowers, using the classic Italian murrini called mille fiore, which is translated to a thousand flowers. In this special 3 hour class, you’ll start by swirling 2 colors together and then dragging a pick through them to create a wonderful feathered paperweight. Then, you will arrange of tiny glass flower murrini that will be transformed into a beautiful paperweight, just like the ones they make in Murano, Italy.

    Your class will begin with a private cane pulling demonstration by Matt Paskiet as you see how cane and murrini like the ones you are using are made. Then you will get to be hands-on with the glass and the help of Matt to make your glass masterpiece. This one time class will take place on Thursday September 21st from 6-9pm.

    Introduction to Cane & Murrine with Matt Paskiet

    Learn the fundamentals of Italian techniques in pulling and picking up cane and murrini in this intimate intensive. Meet for 3 hours each night to watch demos and work closely with Matt to get the basics down. Some color will provided, but students should also bring their own. Students may want to come in early to spend time outside of class cutting cane.

    Start the first night with simple straight cane pulls. The second night, students will learn a basic cane roll up on both a collar and on a bubble. Then last two nights will further explore the vast and varied world of complex cane and murrini. Come ready with ideas and ready to help your classmates and work as a team.

    This class will run in the evening from Sept. 25-28,  3 hours each night from 6-9pm
